Terry Pratchett
Unseen Academicals
This book is exasperatingly excellent. I am not it’s target audience, since it is about football (soccer), yet I consistently (after the first 15 or so) find something profound, eloquent, beautiful (in the truth-is-beauty-and-vice-verse sense), and hilarious. Often in the same sentence.
I have been a long time fan of Mr. Pratchett’s, and I have read a great many of his books. I know that he is dieing of Alzheimer’s (though, technically, we are all dieing of something) and had to dictate this book to an assistant since he can no longer type. The idea of him gazing into his own mind’s eye and speaking the prose that appears in this book makes me apreciate the power that creativity has over death, and over us all.
Alright, that might have been a bit too much mush, but it is a damned fine book. Read it.

Very funny essay at McSweeney’s
